The Northern Open Alba Kendo Championships 2010

October 2nd 2010 at the Kelvinhall (2003 WKC venue), Glasgow, Scotland.

Registration is via the taikai website and all information on the event from accommodation to teams/newsletter/media/photo galleries are available there.

The name change reflects this year's move even further North.  "Alba" is the old Gaelic name for Scotland and as Glasgow will be the venue this year, we thought it quite fitting to include this in the name.

The Northern Open Alba is a non-profit event organised to promote the Art of Kendo, competition and meeting and keiko with fellow Kendoka. Any surplus from this year's Taikai will be donated to a registered Charity.. Event accounts will be posted on the website the day after the Taikai.

Go to  www.northernopen.co.uk  for all Taikai information.

Many Thanks and we look forward to seeing you in October

VI Kharkiv cup and seminar

I would like to firstly say that I was somewhat surprised on briefly reading Geoff Salmon's blog on the BKA website regarding the recent SFB and the associated problems.

Having just returned from the 5th Kharkiv Cup & Seminar in the Ukraine with Sumi, Holt, Tscherter & Kumph sensei, I have to say that it was a joy to be a part of an event that ran without problem or upset. Over 100 persons attended the seminar which ran over 3 days culminating in the Dan examination for 1st Kyu to 5th Dan.

This was then followed on the final day by the Taikai where 120 competitors took part in a 'Ladies Individual' a 'Men's Individual'
and a 'Team Event' where the organisation was both smooth and crisp with all of the necessary infrastructure being in place prior to the competition including the running order, court officials and appointed Referees.

Full credit to the Ukrainian Kendo Federation which although being a newly accepted member of the EKF totally had their act together, ably assisted and advised by the attending sensei especially Holt sensei, who's international experience both in Taikai organisation and Referring is second to none.

It was also a great pleasure for me personally to be able to fully concentrate on just being a Shinpan rather than the usual roles that I have as coordinator at both the European's and Mumeishi Taikai's… The whole event was a real 'breath of fresh air'

The organisers of the Kodokan Seminar wish to make the following statement due to the inaccuracies of the posting on the BKA website regarding the proposed Kendo grading at the seminar in September:

The proposed grading was to be open to all BKA members wishing to grade and it was not a requirement to attend the seminar (residential attendance at the seminar only applied to non BKA member’s i.e. overseas visitors) this was made very clear to the BKA grading Officer on our second request. The Reference to the statement on the Kodokan website regarding there not being a grading, was first posted on our initial request last year and had not been removed to date as we have not had the courtesy of an official reply from the BKA grading officer. It had been hoped for the sake of all concerned (BKA members & seminar attendees) that the grading would take place, as it was in full compliance with the BKA constitution and was offered to the BKA BU without any costs or financial support being asked for from the BKA, this including the venue hire and the 'resident' panel, which means that the BKA have effectively, based on prior grading's at this seminar, turned down some £1500 + in grading revenue. The grading was also to include 5th Dan as there were no grading's scheduled for the membership this year to include this level.

It is worth noting that all of the previous Kodokan seminars for the last 6 years have always had a grading attached, mainly due to the importance of the Japanese delegation lead by Sumi sensei.

We believe that this matter should now be referred to the BKA DRC for Kendo

This is being written with great regret because despite being asked nicely to revisit their calendar in respect of the booking for the Chiba sensei seminar: 3rd - 4th July, the BKA Kendo Bu have shown, at best indifference and at worst contempt for the Charity event which has been booked and advertised since September 2009.

As their policy seems to be that members and clubs have to pay for virtually every thing, there appears to be no other choice than to bring this matter to your attention and appeal directly to the charitable nature of both members and clubs.

We do hope that you can support this worthy event in the following way.

Rather than being invited to put your `odd coppers' in an unregistered donation tin at the Chiba seminar, we would ask that you make your donations through the official channels here at:

www.kendocharity.org.uk

You are in a position not of our choosing but in fully respecting your right of personal choice we would prefer that you to attend the Chiba sensei seminar, if you so wish, without any crisis of conscience and make use of one of the finest teachers that Japan has on offer.

However if you would prefer to join us at the Charity Event, then you will be most welcome and you will have the opportunity to meet many of the European Kendoka who are 'unconditionally' supporting this event.

George Bernard Shaw wrote:- `The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them but to be indifferent to them; that's the essence of inhumanity'.

'A matter of deep concern'

The facts of the matter are that Charity events associated with Macmillan nurses and Maggie's workshop have been part of the Kendo calendar for some years and they have raised considerable sums of money for these charities.

This year the date was published in 2009 and yet only recently the Chiba sensei seminar was announced for the same date in July.

This puts the Kendo membership in an invidious position of having to choose between supporting two important charities and supporting and learning from one of the foremost teachers in Japan.

One could assume that this clash is merely an oversight, a failure to check dates properly but one does wonder why the intensive training practice is also placed at the same time. Also previous experience does suggest that this might not be accidental.
As Alexander Pope put it:-

'For forms of government let fools contest; Whate'er is best administered is best; For modes of faith, let graceless zealots fight; His can't be wronged whose life is in the right In faith and hope the world will disagree But all mankind's concern is charity'.

The arguments in the BKA over recent years demonstrate the first four lines perfectly but it would be calamitous if the last two lines were disregarded

Death comes to us all and many charities are concerned with alleviating the suffering that comes with it and to support those charities is an act that most would applaud. Indeed at some point we all may need their services.

To experience actions that seem to undermine people's charitable urges produces a sense of incredulous shock.

Even at a parochial level one has to ask is this action designed to foster and develop the practice and spirit of Kendo? Is it bearing witness to the concept of kendo that states:Thus will one be able: To love ones country and society; To contribute to the development of culture; And to promote peace and prosperity among all peoples?

These anxieties could be put to rest if the date for the Chiba seminar could be at another date another time.

One hopes this will come to pass

Sincerely, Paul Budden

Stop Press ... 25th Anniversary Kodokan Kendo Seminar returns to Kodokan UK

Announcement

THE KODOKAN SEMINAR HAS FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW HOSTED A GRADING IN FULL COMPLIANCE WITH EKF/IKF REGULATIONS FOR 1ST KYU TO 5TH DAN.  HOWEVER THE BKA KENDO BU HAS CONFIRMED THAT IT DOES NOT INTEND TO APPROVE THIS FOR THE NEXT YEAR.

THIS MEANS THAT THERE WILL NOT BE A GRADING TAKING PLACE AT THE 2010 EVENT, THE 25TH KODOKAN SEMINAR.

ON BEHALF OF THE ORGANISERS AND SENSEI, WE EXTEND OUR APOLOGIES TO THOSE MEMBERS WHO WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE ATTENDED IN ORDER TO GRADE, BUT THE CIRCUMSTANCES ARE BEYOND OUR CONTROL. THE GRADING ASSESSMENT WITH SUMI SENSEI AND THE TEACHERS WILL NOW TAKE PLACE ON THE SUNDAY
